Champion (Sales)

An internal advocate within the buyer's organization who actively promotes and sells the solution on the vendor's behalf.

A champion is an individual within the buyer's organization who has personal credibility, a vested interest in the solution's success, and the willingness to actively advocate for the purchase internally. Champions don't just like your product — they sell it on your behalf when you're not in the room.

What makes a true champion

Not every friendly contact is a champion. A genuine champion has three essential qualities:

  • Access — they can reach and influence the economic buyer and other key stakeholders in the buying committee
  • Credibility — their colleagues trust their judgment and take their recommendations seriously
  • Motivation — they have a personal or professional stake in solving the problem your solution addresses

A champion is willing to coach you on internal dynamics, share information about competing priorities and objections, and spend their own political capital to push the deal forward. They are, in effect, an extension of your sales team inside the buyer's organization.

Why it matters for sales teams

Deals without a champion have dramatically lower win rates. In complex B2B sales, the seller is rarely present for the internal discussions, budget reviews, and executive briefings where purchase decisions actually get made. Without someone advocating on your behalf in those moments, even a great product and compelling demo can lose to inertia or a competitor with better internal positioning.

Building a champion requires investing in the relationship — providing them with the tools, data, and narratives they need to make the case convincingly. The easier you make it for your champion to sell internally, the more effective they'll be.
